Project Management

A compendium of light-based projects I've planned, organized, and executed with artists, visual directors, and builders while working under the banner of Lite Brite Neon Studio.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Bergdorf Goodman's 2017 Holiday Window

Under the direction of David Hoey, Bergdorf Goodman's 2017 holiday windows were an ode to cultural institutions of New York City. To honor the city's legendary Philharmonic, we created a musical playground using 200 lbs of animated ruby red neon tubes.

Alongside a team of skilled builders, I translated extant sketches into a full scale physical wall of metal instruments and neon tubes. I also oversaw technical production, layout drawings, CNC machine work, animation sequencing, and wiring design.

I AM, Tavares Strachan for Desert X 2016

Neon meets Land Art.

After working with Strachan on similar, smaller projects in the past,  we were tasked with the goal of electrifying an immense neon piece using the desert floor as a backdrop. Encompassing an area the size of two football fields, this was an ambitious project featuring nearly 300 man-made craters containing fragments of neon to spell out the statement, "I AM."

Since the piece required working with the natural environment, we rethought how to produce glasswork and wiring for exterior use, working over many months to prototype our final technical design. Throughout the process, I managed everything from layout and glass production to timing and wiring. I also designed a hanging system for neon tube suspension, oversaw the multi-day install, and functioned as a liaison between the artist, landscapers, and ground crew.

The piece was installed in the California desert, February of 2016 for Desert X.

A SMALL BAND, Glenn Ligon for the 2015 Venice Biennale: Giardini-Central Pavillion

Large-scale animated exterior neon art piece that was constructed in New York and later installed on the façade of an Italian pavilion. The piece's complex animation was designed to visual echo Steve Reich's Come Out.

I was the project supervisor, acted as type layout and technical director, managed all CNC machining of alumnium letterforms,  and laid out animation under Ligon's direction.

THE THEATRE, Bergdorf Goodman's 2014 Holiday Window

This neon design was under the directive of Bergdorf Goodman's visual director David Hoey, who was looking for a piece that felt like a cross between  "a pinball machine and the movie Xanadu." We managed to incorporate 200 neon tubes and 600 bulbs flashing and fading into a slender Manhattan shop window,  producing a lively light show for the 2014 holiday season.

I led technical direction, translated digital sketches to their final physical layout, designed animation, and managed an in-house team of three while they assembled, wired, and installed the window.
